Do You Need a Good Cry?

 

Many times clients I meet with apologize for crying in a session. I always reassure them that crying is healthy and my office is a safe place to have a good cry. You may ask, “Is crying really “good” for you?” Yes it is! There is even scientific research to support that. Research shows that tears shed when emotionally crying actually contain stress hormones. Shedding the tears allows those toxins to leave your body. Studies even suggest that emotional tears may release oxytocin, the “love hormone.”

Many of us have been taught that crying is weak or something we shouldn’t do in front of others. On the contrary, tears are one of the body’s natural stress release systems. I would also suggest that crying can be a way to bond with others. Crying and showing vulnerable human emotion helps us connect because we can bond over our common emotional experiences and practice empathy with one another.

What if you want to cry but the tears won’t come? I’ve definitely felt that way before. Here are some suggestions of ways to connect with your emotions and allow the tears to come.

1. Listen to a song with words you can relate to.

2. Label your emotions. Pull up a list of emotion words on the internet and find some that fit.

3. Do a free write. Write whatever comes to your mind without filtering it then go back and read it through compassionate eyes.

4. Talk with someone you trust about what you’re feeling.

5. Watch a movie that has elements in the plot that are similar to what you are going through.

So, next time you feel like holding in the tears, remember the benefits of crying. Let the tears come and don’t be ashamed.
